| Convergence |
Within the ICT (Information Communication Technology)
arena, the buzz-word ‘convergence’ has come to mean various
things: - In pure Telephony terms, it denotes the provision of both fixed-line and mobile services on one phone (making calls over ADSL via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection for example). - In terms of data transfer, it has come to mean the potential for running voice, data and video applications over the same I.P network (link to IP Telephony/VoIP section ). - In Media, it represents the closing contact between the Telecoms, IT and Broadcast industries. - With regard to specific devices, it refers to the combination of two
or more technologies – e.g taking photos on mobile phones or surfing
the web on your television. There is no doubt that convergence will help consumers accept new technologies, business concepts, speed up delivery of information and create economies.
